Nigerians in Cambodia Celebrates Country's Golden Jubillee


Nigerians in Cambodia joined other Nigerians worldwide to Celebrate Nigerian's 50th Anniversary last Friday, October 1st. 50 years ago, the oil rich country of Nigeria, which is the most populated country in Africa and has the third best economy in Africa got independence from the British. The Nigerian Community services Association in conjunction with the African football Union which is mostly dominated by Nigerians came together for a football. Several Veterans like the Out going President of the Association, Ken Gabriel, the newly elected president, Andrew Ehiwarior laced their boots to join in the Football match. Other notable Nigerians who took part are Okezie Ezekiel, Anthony Okeke, Ferdinand Eze, Sunday Daniel and were joined by other Nigerian players who play in the Cambodian Premier league such as Samuel Oseika, Amara Onyeahiri both from (Naga), Philip Ali( Prek Pra), the trio of Anthony Ezekwesi, Ande Apollo and David Njoku ( Preah Khan Reach) and many others to grace the occasion at the National Sports Complex.The match between the Nigerian selected veterans with Ken Gabriel leading the line ended 2-1. Ken Gabriel opened scores in the 5th minute from the penalty spot after being brought down by Woko Maxwell. The out going president was again the architect of the second goal after he set a beautiful pass to Ceaser Aniche whose cut back found Sunday Silva and the striker tapped in easily to give the side a 2-0 lead. Late into the game, The African Selected pulled one back from the spot which was converted by Okezie Ezekiel but it ended up to be a mere consolation.The Independence celebration continued after the game with a dinner party at the famous Lucky Star Hotel later in the evening which attracted well over 200 Nigerians and several other Cambodian and Foreign friends. A speech was presented by the Outgoing President Ken Gabriel after which the Nigerian National Anthem was sang by all present. A 50th Anniversary Cake was cut by dignitaries present and the celebration went on into the night."We as Nigerians are a happy people, although we have so many tribes and ethnic groups in Nigeria but we regard ourselves as ONE NIGERIA and as such our independence day is often a time to celebrate the Unity amongst us" Ken Gabriel said in his speech.
